Auburn sophomore defensive end Derick Hall was ejected from the Tigers’ season opener against Kentucky after he was assessed a penalty for targeting late in the first half.
Hall was flagged for targeting during an interception return by teammate Roger McCreary, who had a 100-yard touchdown wiped off the board as a result of the play. Auburn took a knee, and an 8-7 halftime lead into the locker room.
“I don’t know, I hope it was a common-sense deal,” Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn told SEC Network at halftime, referencing the call.
Hall had two tackles prior to his ejection. The former four-star recruit and top-150 player appeared in 11 games last year as a true freshman.
Kentucky had driven to Auburn’s 1-yard line and appeared to score on a run by Chris Rodriguez, but he was ruled down by the officials. With no timeouts to aid in the set-up of a potential field-goal try on fourth down, UK elected to throw the ball on 3rd and 1. Wilson’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by McCreary.
No. 8 Auburn defeated No. 23 Kentucky, 29-13.
