An early look ahead to the Kentucky Wildcats’ next football game:

The opponent

Kentucky (0-1 SEC) will face Mississippi (0-1 SEC) on Saturday (Oct. 3) at Kroger Field. The game will kick off at 4 p.m. and be telecast by the SEC Network.

The Rebels played the first game of the Lane Kiffin coaching era Saturday at home against Florida and were defeated, 51-35.

Series history

Mississippi leads 28-14-1.

Most recent meeting

Mississippi wide receiver D.K. Metcalf made a leaping catch in the back corner of the end zone over Kentucky cornerback Lonnie Johnson for a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Ta’amu with five seconds left in the game to give the Rebels a 37-34 victory over UK at Kroger Field on Nov. 4, 2017.

Know your foe

1. After three seasons as Florida Atlantic head coach, former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin returns to the SEC as Mississippi head man. Though a controversial presence in college football circles, Kiffin, 45, has had winning records at all three of his college head coaching stops — 7-6 at Tennessee (2009), 28-15 at Southern California (2010-13) and 27-13 at FAU (2017-19).

2. Kiffin is 1-0 in his career vs. Kentucky. He was the Tennessee head coach when the Volunteers escaped the venue then known as Commonwealth Stadium with a 30-24 overtime win on Nov. 28, 2009.

3. Mississippi will come to Lexington 3-14 in its past 17 SEC games.
