Seth McGowan has issued an apology.
With 11:27 to play in the first quarter of Kentucky football’s 35-13 loss at South Carolina on Saturday night, the senior running back scored the Wildcats’ first and only touchdown of the game.
Following the 20-yard rushing score, McGowan threw the football toward the stands, where it hit a South Carolina fan.
After the game, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers did his postgame interview with SEC Network with said football in his hands.
“My grandad was the one who got hit with the ball the first touchdown from Kentucky,” Sellers said during the interview. “So, I was gonna go down there and give it to him.”
After the game, McGowan posted his apology on social media.
“Today during our game vs South Carolina,” McGowan wrote. “I threw a ball after a touchdown meaning to throw it at the barrier in front of the stands and during a high energy moment the ball struck a fan. What I did was absolutely unacceptable and not at all reflective of myself nor this program.
“If anyone can get me in contact with the fan or his family I would like to formally apologize to them and make it up any way possible. Also I would like to apologize to the entire fans of South Carolina Football and their program.”
McGowan also spoke about the incident with the media after the game.
“That’s completely my fault,” McGowan said. “I would extend another apology, but out here I would like to apologize to the fan I connected with. I tried to throw it at the ground, and in a high energy moment, kind of slipped out, came out wrong. So, absolutely unacceptable. And that’s something that won’t happen again.”
McGowan ran for 112 yards and the aforementioned touchdown on 17 carries in the loss. The New Mexico State transfer leads UK (2-2, 0-2 SEC) in rushing yards through four games with 387 yards and seven touchdowns on 68 carries.
The Wildcats’ road stand continues next weekend with a noon game at Georgia (3-1, 1-1 SEC). The Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday night, 24-21 to rival Alabama.
