Girls’ 11th Region tournament pairings set and include three top-25 teams
Frederick Douglass and Franklin County, the two highest-rated teams in 11th Region girls’ basketball, drew opposite sides of the region’s tournament bracket for this week’s games.
The No. 14 Broncos and No. 21 Flyers, along with No. 23 Madison Central and Lexington Catholic, will host Monday’s first round as a reward for their respective district championships. The district runners-up fill out the rest of the seeds.
The girls’ and boys’ region semifinals and finals will be held at Eastern Kentucky University’s Baptist Health Arena. The bracket drawings took place Saturday morning at Bryan Station High School.
If Frederick Douglass can defeat Great Crossing and Madison Central beats Tates Creek in Monday’s openers, they will face each other in a Dave Cantrall ratings top-25 matchup in Wednesday’s semifinals. Douglass defeated Madison Central 67-58 at home in Lexington on Jan. 14.
Lexington Catholic will take on Madison Southern, who the Knights bested 56-42 less than two weeks ago.
For the second year in a row, Bryan Station drew Franklin County as its first-round opponent.
Franklin County has won the last three region titles and six out of the last eight. A Lexington team hasn’t claimed the region championship and earned a trip to the Girls’ Sweet 16 since Lafayette did it in 2014.
The semifinals will be held Wednesday at EKU, but due to a potential conflict with possible postseason games for EKU’s men’s team, the planned time for Saturday’s girls’ region finals is tentative.
