Fayette Invitational provides weekend gauntlet for Lexington baseball teams

Lexington’s high school baseball teams will test themselves against some of the state’s best this Friday and Saturday as the city’s six public schools host the annual Fayette County Invitational Tournament, a showcase of 36 games in two days.

Lexington has three teams ranked in the latest PrepBaseballReport.com Top 25 — No. 5 Sayre, No. 16 Lexington Catholic and No. 25 Henry Clay.

The FCIT includes six doubleheaders on Friday and six quadrupleheaders on Saturday at Bryan Station, Frederick Douglass, Henry Clay, Lafayette, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Tates Creek.

Lexington Catholic will play its games at Bryan Station while Sayre will be at Lafayette.

No. 19 Ryle is the other ranked team in the tournament, but teams including Scott County, Campbell County, George Rogers Clark and University Heights will also compete and are listed as “teams to watch” by PrepBaseballReport.com.

Some of the top players who should see action include Kentucky commits Owen Jenkins and Jack Sams of Lexington Catholic; Louisville commits Nicholas Ballard of Manual and Carson Shee of Eastern; Bellarmine commits Jaxson Howard of Sayre, Cody Decker of LexCath and Ethan Carroll of Eastern; Western Kentucky commit Reece Harbison of Frederick Douglass; and Eastern Kentucky commits Calvin Johnson of Douglass and Kamden McAlpin of George Rogers Clark.

Sayre’s Jaxson Howard got the win in a relief appearance against Danville in which the Spartans pulled away to a 12-6 victory in the first round of the All “A” Classic as Sayre Athletic Complex on April 18.
