Dates for the first high school football championship games to be played in Lexington since the 1970s have been finalized.
The KHSAA approved a three-day schedule for the 2017 Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl as part of its first organized meeting of the 2017-18 school year over the weekend.
Action will kick off with the Class A finals at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. The Class 3A finals will follow at 7 p.m. that night.
Saturday, Dec. 3, will feature a three-game slate: Class 2A finals (1 p.m.), Class 4A finals (4:30 p.m.) and Class 5A finals (8 p.m.) will be staged consecutively.
The Class 6A finals — which will feature the two largest schools participating — are scheduled for 2p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4.
The KHSAA in May announced that it would move the football championships games to Kroger Field in Lexington from Bowling Green, where they had been contested since 2009. The last time Lexington, which projects to be less of a travel burden for many contenders, hosted the football finals was in 1976.
▪ The KHSAA also finalized cross-bracketing football playoff pairings for Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 4A. Those pairings can be found at bit.ly/2u5SRnY.
