Last original tenant leaving The Summit’s food hall. Where they’re going, what’s next

The last original tenant of The Barn at The Summit, once billed as one of the top food halls in America, is leaving.

Whiskey Bear, the bar opened by Daniel and Flo Marlowe in the dining and shopping development in 2017, will serve its last craft cocktail there on Oct. 3.

They plan to reopen at 3195 Beaumont Center Circle, near J. Render’s Southern Table & Bar, in early 2022.

They announced the news to move on social media on Thursday.

“We’re super excited,” said Daniel Marlowe. “We are also going to be introducing fast-casual pizza concept, Neapolitan-style pizza that will be a sister concept to Whiskey Bear.”

Whiskey Bear was part of the original concept for The Barn, which had seven local food vendors with a communal dining space. But The Summit announced the food hall, with a couple of exceptions, would close in May 2020.

Shortly afterward, ice cream seller Crank & Boom moved to Clays Mill Road, leaving Whiskey Bear without any food companions.

The Barn at The Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington opened in 2017 with local food vendors Athenian Grill, Atomic Ramen, Crank & Boom, La Petite Creperie, Pasture by Marksbury, Smithtown Seafood, Whiskey Bear and the Kentucky for Kentucky shop.

But the Marlowes said that despite that they managed to hang on during the COVID pandemic. This spring, however, they decided to make a change.

“So many ups and downs and we’ve been stretched, and against all odds still standing,” Flo Marlowe said. She said that Bayer Properties, which developed The Summit at Fritz Farm, has been great to work with but they were ready to find a new spot with better parking.

The new location also will give them a chance to add a new concept: Addie’s Stone-Fired Pizza will be under the same roof, but with different hours, the Marlowes said. Named for their daughter, Adaline, the restaurant will serve specialty pizzas.

They also will continue to serve craft cocktails and they plan to add patio seating, which has been a big draw at The Summit location.

Representatives of The Summit did not respond to requests for comment on plans for The Barn space.
