Ice cream chain isn’t open in Lexington yet but it’s already picked a second location
The Lexington ice cream wars are heating up: A new-to-Kentucky chain is doubling down, planning a second location before the first is even open.
Andy’s Frozen Custard, a Missouri-based chain that specializes in ultra thick custard “concretes,” is opening its first restaurant at 1200 S. Broadway and American Avenue later this year.
Now, they are planning a second at 2800 Richmond Rd., according to a building permit filed with the city. The new 2,139-square-foot building is expected to cost an estimated $950,000, according to the application. Andy’s stores typically have drive-thrus and walk-up windows, with very little indoor seating.
It will be near a burgeoning restaurant row of Columbia Steakhouse, Skyline Chili, LaRosa’s Pizzeria and First Watch and the coming KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot restaurant.
Andy’s did not immediately respond to a request for comment on when the locations might open.
What is on Andy’s Frozen Custard menu?
The menu at Andy’s includes “concretes” made with custard blended with items to mix in such as cookies and candy. And “the Jackhammer,” a Andy’s custard concrete with a hole in the middle filled with a topping such as hot fudge or caramel.
What is the difference between custard and ice cream? According to Andy’s, it is creamier because it has more butterfat and is churned very slowly to keep air from mixing into the custard as it freezes.
Lexington ice cream shops
Andy’s Frozen Custard joins other Lexington ice cream and frozen treat spots Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Culver’s, Graeters Ice Cream, Shake Shack, Steak ‘n Shake, BurgerFi and Coldstone Creamery, among others, as well as local options including Crank & Boom Ice Cream and its sister concept BoBi Cones soft serve, Sorella Gelateria, Sav’s Gourmet Ice Cream and Freshie’s Ice Cream & Soda Fountain.
And that doesn’t even include the many places that specialize in Mexican ice cream. Or the Buzzed Bull Creamery coming to Hamburg.
