For the first time since 2009, the Kentucky football team has scored on a kick return touchdown.
Barely.
To begin the second half of Saturday night’s season-opening game against Miami (Ohio), true freshman Barion Brown went 100 yards from one end zone to the other to give the Wildcats a two-possession lead and electrify a soldout Kroger Field.
Brown dropped the football on the ground to celebrate his kick return score, and it appears he barely broke the goal line before doing so.
The play was called a touchdown on the field, and the call stood after a lengthy replay review.
Judge for yourself below if Brown did reach the end zone or not.
The kick return touchdown was UK’s first such score since Sept. 19, 2009, when UK’s Derrick Locke also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Louisville.
This makes Brown’s score the first Kentucky kick return touchdown under head coach Mark Stoops.
It also served as a turning point in Saturday’s game.
Kentucky played a competitive first half against Miami (Ohio) and only led 13-10 at halftime. The Wildcats forced a fumble on defense and scored on a Will Levis touchdown pass to Chauncey Magwood following the kick return score, boosting Kentucky’s lead to three possessions.
