Cutter Boley’s first start as Kentucky football quarterback ended in the third quarter due to a helmet-to-helmet hit from a Louisville defender.
Facing third-and-6 at the UK 31-yard line with 12:03 left in the third quarter, Boley appeared to gain a first down with a pass to Barion Brown as he was hit from behind, but Brown dropped the pass and Louisville defensive lineman Thor Griffith slammed his helmet into Boley’s facemask as he was being brought to the ground. The play was reviewed for targeting, which resulted in Griffith’s ejection from the game.
Boley remained down on the field during the replay review then was helped to the injury tent on UK’s sideline by trainers. Backup quarterback Gavin Wimsatt led the Wildcats to their first touchdown of the game after Kentucky was awarded the first down due to the targeting penalty.
After UK’s defense forced a Louisville punt, Wimsatt remained in the game with Boley still being evaluated in the injury tent. The UK sports network then reported on the radio broadcast Boley would not return to the game.
Boley, who had shined off the bench in the last two games against Murray State and Texas, completed just 6 of 15 passes for 48 yards and two interceptions before his injury.
Quarterback Brock Vandagriff, who started the first 11 games of the season, was apparently unavailable despite being in uniform on the sideline.
