Here are your most commonly Googled questions about the Kentucky Derby answered
Did you know the Kentucky Derby is Saturday? It’s true, look it up on the nearest calendar if you don’t believe me.
The 148th running of the Derby is very much upon us, and Kentuckians can naturally sense it drawing nearer. It’s a sixth sense we’re all born with.
With the big race fast approaching, I’ve found answers to some of y’all’s most burning questions about the Derby, or at least what is being Googled the most.
What time is the Derby?
The Kentucky Derby is affectionately called the “fastest two minutes in sports,” but it does have to actually start at some point. There are races at Churchill Downs before the official Derby takes off.
Races start around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, but the main spectacle isn’t until closer to 7 p.m., or 6:57 p.m. if you want to be as exact as possible. At approximately 6:39 p.m. the crowd will join in on singing “My Old Kentucky Home,” which isn’t mandatory but adds to the atmosphere.
If you’re watching from home make sure to tune into NBC, USA Network, WLEX-18 and other channels.
How to bet on the Derby
Believe it or not some people make money on the Derby. I think the most I’ve ever made has been around $100, but I have it on good authority that others make a considerable bit more.
Now if you’re going to be at Churchill Downs you can place bets there onsite. If you’re wanting to go out in Lexington you could go to Keeneland or Red Mile. You can also wager from the comfort of your home online. Here are some online options that exist for you.
If you’re not sure who to bet on then we’ve got some expert predictions for you, and long shots that could result in a big payday.
What are the post positions?
What post you end up with in the Derby matters a lot when you’re looking at betting on a winner. While each horse and each Derby is different, there is historical precedent for which post positions are better than others. You can find the full post positions here.
What do the odds look like?
One of my favorite things about the Derby is that even despite some of the best predictions and analysis, sometimes it all just comes down to fate. The past couple of Derby races have even had some wild disqualifications.
But to this specific question, here’s a look at this year’s odds and some of the favorites to win.
