Liquid-nitrogen ice cream place coming to Lexington. And you can add a shot of bourbon
Lexington is getting a lot colder and creamier, with new ice cream options cropping up all over town. Now it’s about to get a bit boozier as well.
Buzzed Bull Creamery is coming to The Summit at Fritz Farm, the multi-use development at Nicholasville Road and Man o’ War.
“Buzzed Bull is ice cream but with a kick,” said founder Kaitlyn Mounce. The Cincinnati-based shop specializes in ice cream flash-frozen with liquid-nitrogen.
It’s all made fresh when you order and you can add in a shot or two of alcohol, including dozens of options of bourbon and other whiskeys, vodka, tequila or various liqueurs.
There are more than 20 standard ice cream flavors, Mounce said “but we can make anything people can think up.”
The new shop will open in the spring at 105 Summit at Fritz Farm Suite 105, beside Blue Sushi Sake Grill where Kentucky Mist Moonshine used to have a shop, said franchisee Ellen Kendrick.
The ice cream also can be made without alcohol and is popular with families, in part because you can make it any flavor or combination you can dream up. And because it is made super cold, the ice cream stays cold from the first bite to the last.
“You’re not only getting an ice cream, you’re getting an experience with that nitrogen, you watch it go from liquid to ice cream in under 2 minutes. Billow of smoke captivates all audience,” Mounce said. “And we have a premium product that stands behind the experience. And it really is considerably different than any other ice cream you’ve tasted. Very noticeable texture and taste experience. Even custard.”
Kendrick said her husband Noah’s favorite is the honey bourbon pecan. It’s made with the house bourbon Evan Williams, but can be upgraded to Woodford Reserve Double Oaked or even Angel’s Envy.
Kendrick said that they are not restaurant owners but tried Buzzed Bull, fell in love with it and started looking around Lexington for a spot to open their own.
“We’re very excited can’t wait to get open. We started this process before COVID,” she said. “Before COVID we were looking at other locations and Crank & Boom was still there, so it wasn’t even an option. After they moved to Clays Mill it left The Summit open for us.”
Kendrick said they didn’t want to be in direct competition with another premium ice cream.
Which is getting harder: Recently, Andy’s Frozen Custard picked out a spot on South Broadway, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is opening a second location on Nicholasville Road, Crumbl Cookies, which also serves ice cream, is going into Hamburg and locally owned Freshie’s Ice Cream & Soda Fountain opened in Hartland.
And that’s on top of Culver’s, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Shake Shack, Steak ‘n Shake, BurgerFi, Coldstone Creamery, among others, as well as local options including Crank & Boom Ice Cream, Sorella Gelateria and Sav’s Gourmet Ice Cream.
Buzzed Bull will be open from mid-day to about 9 p.m. daily, and also serves milkshakes and coffee drinks.
And expect to see more Buzzed Bull Creameries popping up: Mounce said that the chain, founded in 2017, has only five locations now but is expecting to have 30 open in 2021, with 130 under contract.
