Kentucky universities are monitoring winter weather conditions and several decided to cancel in-person classes Thursday and Friday.

Some universities will operate remotely, while others have not yet made a decision for classes later this week.

Parts of central and western Kentucky were placed under an ice storm warning ahead of another winter storm which began to hit the state Thursday. The storm is expected to cause hazardous conditions Thursday night into Friday. Between 0.25 and 0.5 inches of ice accumulation is possible, followed by the potential for an inch of snow and sleet, according to the National Weather Service.

Transylvania University

Transylvania University will operate remotely again on Friday because of winter weather, the school announced.

The school operated remotely on Thursday as winter weather moved into Lexington.

Transylvania employees who can work remotely are being asked to do so. Essential personnel should report as normal, the university said.

“Faculty will decide whether to hold class virtually or make up the class time, and students should monitor their email for any communication from faculty regarding the status of classes,” the university said in a statement.

On-campus dining will remain open on Thursday until 7 p.m., and brunch and dinner will be available on Friday.

University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky will be closed again Friday, the school announced Thursday night.

In-person classes at UK have been canceled, and on-campus employees should not report to work, UK said in a tweet. UK HealthCare facilities will remain open.

UK was also closed Thursday.

“UK is taking this step after reviewing weather forecasts, which predict ice and low temperatures that will impact traffic conditions,” the university said in a news release when announcing Thursday’s in-person classes were canceled.

Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University will move to virtual operations at noon on Thursday, the university announced.

“University operations and in-person instruction will transition to remote/virtual instruction for the day,” the university said. “For those classes that cannot shift to remote/virtual instruction, instructors should advise students as to appropriate measures, make-up activities, or revised deadlines.”

Kentucky State University

Kentucky State University will operate remotely on Friday, the school announced Thursday night. Classes will be held virtually and non-essential employees should work from home.

“The University community is advised to monitor weather conditions closely and be cautious as the weather changes,” the university said in a statement.

Kentucky State University also operated remotely on Thursday.

Centre College

Centre College encouraged all employees, except those providing critical services, to leave campus early on Thursday. Classes will be held virtually on Friday, and employees should plan to work from home, the university announced.

University of Louisville

The University of Louisville will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Classes have been canceled and university offices are closed, the school said in a tweet.

Northern Kentucky University

Northern Kentucky University’s campus will be closed on Friday. All offices are closed, and classes and events are canceled, the university said.

Western Kentucky University

Western Kentucky University will close at 4:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, canceling all evening classes, the school announced.

The campus will remain closed on Friday, with no classes. Only essential personnel should report to campus, the university said.

“WKU will continue to monitor weather throughout the day, and if it becomes necessary to close earlier, an announcement will be made via email, text, on social media, and on the WKU News website,” the university said.

Murray State

Across the state, Murray State University closed its campus at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and will remain closed until 7 a.m. on Saturday. Classes were canceled for the rest of the week, the university said.

“The closure today will allow all faculty, staff and students adequate time to travel home before road conditions deteriorate later this evening,” the university said.

Residence halls and Winslow Cafeteria will remain open, and some events will continue as scheduled at Murray State. Racer Arena will open as a warming center on Wednesday evening.
