Twelve teams have been selected to the inaugural College Football Playoff, and none of those teams is from Kentucky.
While Louisville and Western Kentucky fans will be traveling to bowl games later this month, Big Blue Nation has moved on to basketball season — and, of course, volleyball.
And that made us wonder — and maybe nobody else — which of the College Football Playoff schools have combined with their basketball programs to produce the most successful athletics trifecta this holiday season.
If you add up each school’s CFP ranking and its current NCAA NET ratings for men’s and women’s basketball into one composite total, that honor goes to … the Tennessee Volunteers.
Tennessee, which will visit Ohio State in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Dec. 21, was No. 7 in Sunday’s final CFP rankings with a record of 10-2. The Volunteers’ men’s basketball team, 9-0 and ranked No. 1 in this week’s Associated Press poll, was No. 2 (behind Auburn) in Wednesday’s NET rankings. Tennessee’s Lady Vols (7-0) have a NET rating of 27.
Add it all up — No. 7, plus No. 2, plus No. 27 — and Tennessee’s rankings totaled 36. The Volunteers’ total narrowly edged out Ohio State’s three-program total of 40.
(Though not counted for the purpose of this exercise, bonus points to Oregon, Penn State and Texas, who join Kentucky in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament this week.)
