A former Kentucky Wildcat delivered an emotional and inspiring moment to the Rupp Arena faithful on Wednesday night.
Todd Svoboda, who played for Rick Pitino’s 1992-93 Final Four team at Kentucky, performed the “Y” during a break in the action of UK’s 78-67 men’s basketball win over Colgate.
The appearance of the 6-foot-9 Svoboda walking to center court wearing a prosthetic on his right leg sent a jolt through the 19,646 in attendance.
Svoboda handed off his crutches, then proudly performed the traditional “Y” honor (the last letter in K-E-N-T-U-C-K-Y) with a huge smile and both hands thrust skyward.
Svoboda was forced to have the leg amputated last summer after an infection resulting from a bone cancer diagnosis several years ago.
The Herald-Leader’s Mark Story told Svoboda’s story in full last summer.
