Spotz Gelato is growing. The popular sweet shop is opening its fourth location, this time in downtown Midway.

The new Spotz Gelato will open at 130 E. Main St. on April 9, according to owner Beth Richardson. The location joins Shelbyville, which opened in 2020, and Georgetown and Versailles, which opened in 2019.

A Spotz Gelato on Broadway in Lexington closed in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.

But 2021 is making up for lost time: Several new ice cream options have announced plans to open in or around Lexington recently, including Cattywampus Shakes, Buzzed Bull Creamery, Andy’s Frozen Custard, Crumbl Cookies, and more.

“The opening of Spotz Gelato Midway is extra special because we make the products on our farm, which is near the historic town. We spend a lot of time in Midway and look forward to being part of the movement to encourage people to embrace Kentucky’s small towns and small businesses,” Richardson said in the news release. Spotz Gelato is a Kentucky Proud brand, meaning it features Kentucky-grown farm products.

Spotz offers a rotation of 10 flavors of small-batch gelato and sorbet, available for dining in or to go. And now, Spotz is adding vegan gelato.

“After years of people requesting vegan options, we created a delicious vegan recipe that has the creamy consistency of our gelato. We’ll start producing vegan options of our most popular flavors and, eventually, every flavor we create could also have a vegan version,” Richardson said.

The shops also will add custom dipped and rolled cones to go with a lineup of milkshakes, floats, sundaes, Italian sodas and affogato (gelato in coffee or espresso.)

Richardson and her husband, Philip Enlow, created Spotz Gelato in 2013, starting with a food truck, which they still offer for rental for events, weddings and private parties. Besides their Kentucky locations, they have a scoop shop in Las Penitas, Nicaragua.
