Between the time Aristides won the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 and next Saturday’s 148th resumption of the Thoroughbred horse racing classic at Churchill Downs, history has mostly smiled on our state’s iconic annual gem.

However, as the centerpiece of a sport diminished through recent years by bad actors, mistreatment of its very participants and haphazard leadership, how much do Americans, Kentuckians, Louisvillians and Lexingtonians still care about the Run for the Roses?

In Sunday’s Lexington Herald-Leader and online at Kentucky.com, we’re examining the relevance of the Kentucky Derby from cultural, sports, national and local perspectives.
