Kentucky school districts cancel classes, move online Monday in wake of winter storm

Kentucky is hit with significant winter storm

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for many areas of the state.

Several Eastern and Central Kentucky school districts have canceled in-person classes Monday due to a winter storm in the region.

Lincoln County Schools’ officials additionally canceled in-person classes Tuesday, and said they would have virtual learning both days.

Fayette County Public Schools students were not scheduled to return from winter break until Tuesday. A staff work day was originally scheduled for Monday. But shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, district officials announced all in-person activities are canceled due to inclement weather.

Fayette schools officials also said Sunday they will share an update regarding Tuesday’s school schedule no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday.

Some schools will have virtual learning from home, while others will have traditional snow days, with no at-home learning. These are the announced closures as of 3 p.m. Sunday.

These districts announced at-home learning for Monday: Floyd, Anderson, Fleming, Lincoln, Menifee, Nicholas, Mason, Leslie, Boyle, Russell, Scott, Wayne, Wolfe, Harlan County and Somerset Independent.

These districts announced traditional snow days with no at-home learning: Morgan, Franklin, Clark, Lawrence, Lexington Catholic High School. Madison, Casey, Paris City Schools and Pulaski.

These schools simply said they were closed Monday: Saints Peter and Paul Catholic school and Lexington Christian Academy in Lexington; Lewis, Jackson and Model Lab in Richmond.

These schools have also canceled in person classes for Tuesday with at home learning: Lincoln.

“Due to the projected weather forecast Floyd County Schools will be closed January 6, 2025,” a district post said Sunday afternoon. “This will be NTI Day 4.”

Almost all of Kentucky is under a winter storm watch through Monday evening. The National Weather Service said the storm moving into the region Sunday will likely include a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Anderson County Schools is having an at-home learning, or non-traditional instruction day, Monday.

Morgan County Schools’ and Franklin County Schools’ , Lexington Catholic High School, officials said they would have a regular snow day Monday with no formal at-home learning.

At Boyle County Schools, which has at-home learning Monday, officials asked that no vehicles enter school parking lots so that maintenance crews can effectively manage snow removal later this week.

In Lexington, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic, and Lexington Christian Academy school officials said on Facebook, without elaborating, there would be no school Monday.
