Kentucky is hit with significant winter storm

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for many areas of the state.

Road conditions are expected to worsen across much of Kentucky Sunday as the state is hit by Winter Storm Blair, a major system blanketing much of the Midwestern United States, and eastward, with snow and ice.

Fayette County roads had a thick layer of snow by mid morning Sunday, making for slow travel as drivers used caution. Mayor Linda Gorton has urged Lexington residents to stay off the roads. According to the National Weather Service, total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 7 inches is possible in Lexington; freezing rain and ice is also forecast for later tonight.

Statewide, those who can stay home should do so, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises. Traffic cameras show live road conditions in Fayette County, and in most areas where crews have worked, the roads were again quickly covered by a new, fresh blanket of snow as of mid-morning.

People can view the road conditions in real-time on the city’s website. Additionally, you can see real-time driving conditions across the state here.
